Melissa Eliza Devlin is a member of the Port City Eight and a main protagonist in The Demon's Light. She is an eighteen-year-old Nephilim who wakes up in an abandoned barn with retrograde amnesia. Finding herself with a group of new companions, she embarks on a journey of self-discovery and survival across Euclid.

Appearance[]

At 5'6 feet tall, Melissa Devlin is about average height. She has dirty blond hair that flows in long curly waves and amber eyes that often look brown. Melissa's physique is toned and athletic with a medium tan, a result of her rigorous training in the Ackerman Militia. Her most notable features are the number of scars she has: a bite mark on her shoulder, and three claw marks staining her left arm that have faded with time. Melissa normally wears little to no makeup, at most only wearing a bit of lipstick and blush.

Before rejoining the militia, her preferred style of clothing is black combo jeans and a sleeveless top with dark boots.

In the second season, her hair is dyed auburn and she begins to wear green contacts when she adopts an alias. She begins to favor her militia uniform, though she often switches between that and the old style.

Personality[]

Melissa is the most passionate of the protagonists. She does not always think logically, and she refuses to leave a friend in harm's way no matter the cost ― she would rush into dangerous and life-threatening circumstances to rescue a friend if she needed to. She has shown herself to be capable of putting her fears aside and stepping up to do what needs to be done.

Earlier in the first season, she was the quietest protagonist, but as she regained her memories, she turned into a confident and occasionally playful young woman the others would tend to look up to from time to time. Her bond with her brother Steven not only showed her warm, caring side but also that she had a rebellious personality.

Biography[]

Background[]

In 300 TP, Melissa and her fraternal twin brother Steven were born to Stanley Devlin and Juno, an angel. To hide the affair, Stanley married his closest friend, Maggie Harper, and convinced her to adopt both of his children and raise them as her own to hide their true identity.

After almost a decade of successfully concealing what the twins really were, a small militia group by the name of Headhunters discovered that Melissa and Steven were in fact Nephilim. Upon this discovery, they leapt into action and set the house ablaze when they believed the Devlin family was asleep inside. Fortunately, the twins had been at their uncle Richard's lab and evaded the ambush. Their parents were not as lucky.

After their parents' deaths, the two siblings were sent to live with their aunt and uncle, scientists Binita and Richard Devlin, at the age of seven. Raised for most of her life in the living quarters of her uncle's research facility, the Laboratory of the Unexplainable, Melissa developed a taste for rebellion as she grew older.

When Melissa discovered her father Stanley had been apart of an old paramilitary organization known as the Ackerman Militia, she wanted to join the group, causing conflict with Richard, as he did not want her following her father's footsteps since he believed the militia was too dangerous for her.

A year later, at the age of sixteen, Melissa's aunt Binita died. After a few weeks of contentious arguments and funeral proceedings had finished, Melissa got into a significant argument with her increasingly restrictive uncle. Soon after, she was sent on an errand which she used as an opportunity to run away from home and join the militia. While Steven knew where she had gone, Richard was in the dark and assumed she couldn't handle living with her family any longer.

Three years later, in Nialus 319, Melissa and a squad from the Ackerman Militia were following rumors of a newly stationed Nuyo-Dyavol Coalition troop in the Gladean forest when they stumbled across a battle between the demon troop and a group of civilian teenagers fighting. Intervening, the militia squad began to clash with the demons.

After an intense fight, where the entire squad and most of the civilians were slain, Melissa and the lone survivor — a teenage boy with dark hair and gray eyes — retreated to a nearby barn. Though she tried to remain alert, she eventually succumbed to her injuries and fell unconscious. When she eventually woke up after being discovered by Savannah Whitesmith, Melissa began to suffer from retrograde amnesia and became unable to remember her past.

Abilities[]

In "Safe Haven," Melissa is shown using her healing ability for the first time, when she healed Blossom's broken legs before leaving the Port City Eight to rejoin the Ackerman Militia. While she was gone, she developed enhanced athletic abilities, as well as telepathy which she uses to help her squad members, which they kept secret from the rest of the Militia.
