Angels are a species in The Demon's Light that originate from the planet Eden. They, alongside the demons, were one of the species to invade Euclid.
Biology and appearance[]
Angels are a relatively similar species to humans, though much taller on average. The male and female sexes have very little sexual dimorphism. Unlike humans, angels can have a widely variable amount of eyes on their faces and arms.
Notably, angels are capable of flight as they have hollow bones and feathered wings.
History[]
Archangels[]
After creating the angels and demons and countless forms of wildlife and fauna, the Power Vritra felt that his work was unfinished and believed he needed assistants who could watch over Eden whenever he left the realm. Picking a group of six angels (Anafiel, Ezekiel, Jophiel, Makiel, Oroiael, and Zaqiel) that Vritra deemed the most qualified, he granted them immortality, enhanced strength that rivaled minor Powers, and Aegis-class reality manipulating abilities.
In term of appearance, he decided to recreate their image to seperate them from the other angels and gifted them larger wings, fairer skin, and deep blue eyes that emitted a blinding glow.
Before the War[]
Angels were created as the dominant species of Eden. Vritra created the demons as a worker caste to serve under the angels. Slavery of demonkind continued under Vritra for most of Eden's history. A foreign god, Xeren, incited the demons into rebellion and formed a military alongside them. Eden quickly erupted into war, after Vritra created the Sabaoth as a response. The archangel, Makiel, was designated as the "Superior General" by Vritra and given control of the angel military.
During an intense and weeks-long battle at Primum, Eden's capital, Xeren killed Makiel and eventually his successors as Superior General — Oroiael and Zaqiel. Their deaths, along with the loss of countless angels, caused the angels to concede the battle and resulted in the Demon Army claiming control of the city. Jophiel was raised to the position of Superior General and, along with Anafiel and Ezekiel, was tasked with defending Empyrean, the new capital.
Months later, the war reached its climax when the Demon Army marched upon Empyrean. Deseperate to defend the city, Jophiel challenged Xeren to a one-on-one match and was easily destroyed by Xeren. After noticing the pattern of events, Vritra decided that he could no longer sit on the sidelines and intervened in the battle before Xeren could kill Anafiel and Ezekiel.
Despite their similiar strengths, Xeren eventually bested Vritra and killed him in the fields of Empryean. With Vritra martyred and the angels emboldened, the combat only increased in ferocity. Xeren was executed by the Powers for his transgression shortly after, leaving the demons at a severe disadvantage.
After years of war threatening to destroy the demons, Xeren's heir, Cicero, came of age to lead the army. Cicero used his inherited abilities to create portals to his father's world, Euclid, intending to make it their new seat of power. The angels were shocked to discover a majority of their opponents vanished without a trace.
Three weeks after the demons had disappeared, a portal appeared in Empyrean. Representatives of human governments greeted the angels who came through, and explained the circumstances of the demon invasion. The angels took it upon themselves to take over the facility that housed the portal, and their presence on Euclid initiated a three-way war between angels, demons, and mankind.
The Great War[]
The Sabaoth found themselves with a distinct advantage over their opponents, due to their physical capabilities and superior weaponry. However, they were severely outnumbered by both the demons and humans. The angels claimed territory around the southern coasts of the continents Thales and Hala.
In the early years of the war, Ezekiel, now the Superior General, managed to convince Anafiel to arrive in Euclid and the two launched a surprise attack against Cicero. Surprised and unprepared for Cicero's strength, Ezekiel fell in battle and Anafiel was heavily wounded.
After informing the Advisors of Ezekiel's death, Anafiel refused to take the mantle of being Superior General and returned to Eden, becoming a reclusive nomad. Due to the fact that Anafiel and Ezekiel were biological twins, Cicero was unable to identify which archangel he had killed and the Sabaoth used this to their advantage. The advisors pushed propaganda that Anafiel had been murdered by Cicero and that their beloved leader, Ezekiel, was still alive. In order to hide this secret, they created a position named "Mouth of Ezekiel" and used a representative to communicate "messages" from the fallen leader.
Under Gabriel Arsene II, Alchemilia Corporation formed a covert alliance with the angels, on the pretense that the angels would likely win the war without interference. Arsene intended to give the angels access to atomic weaponry, a long-forgotten and devastating method of warfare, in order to threaten the other parties into surrender.
Society and culture[]
Angel society is rigid and caste-based, primarily due to the loss of their slave workforce. Angels are normally isolationist, rarely interacting with humans outside of combat and occasional trade.
